My vegan girlfriend & I spend a lot of time at a warehouse in Emeryville/West Oakland -- we head to the nearby Trader Joe's and get a bunch of food to snack on, but when it comes to *quickly* dining at an actual restaurant for an actual meal, we're coming up short:
in the nearby Emeryville shopping ctr place there's an Askew Grill that's been alright, as well as Pasta Pomodoro, but we're getting sick of these - not much selection as it is. There's also Rudy's Can't Fail around the corner but I really dislike their food in general and the selection, once again, is slim.

Any suggestions for dining out vegan-style in West Oakland/Emeryville without having to drive all the way to Berkeley?

The menu is a fixed price, 11 course extravaganza (truthfully, 14 courses with all the extras) that is predominantly vegetarian. 7 of 11 were 100% vegetrain, with the other 4 offering a choice between vegetarian or not (duck, fish, etc.) A large portion of them were vegan.
So...I am vegan. My partner is veggie. My parents and my partner's parents aren't.

In fact, not only are they not vegan, but they don't like Indian or Japanese (or maybe Chinese, depending on the weather) food....or anything "strange" or spicy. I am at a complete loss since everywhere we go is vegan, veggie, raw, or internationally inspired. I tried to look through the Bay Area Veggie site food finder, but still I haven't come up with anything.

Is there anywhere in SF where we could take them for dinner. Perhaps some Italian (with something besides pasta for one of the dad's) or "American" type of food where a vegan can eat? I don't mind if there is even only one dish as long as it isn't an iceberg salad!

Oh -- and no only pizza places. Sigh.

From Teresa Anderson at the Gaia Foundation
4 September 2006

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The GM rice contamination scandal continues to be felt across the US and internationally. Tests have shown that the contamination of conventional rice by Bayer's illegal LL601 variety, is extremely widespread. According to the Secretary for Agriculture for Arkansas, a major rice-growing state, almost all tests are coming up positive for LL601, especially for milled rice. Prices for US rice have dropped dramatically, and now a number of rice-growing farmers are suing Bayer for negligence and compensation.

While Japan has banned imports of US rice altogether, the EU is only allowing shipments that have been shown to be free of GM contamination. A shipment arriving in Holland was found to contain the illegal variety. However, a new 10-minute strip test that the USDA and Bayer have developed is totally inadequate. The test only shows positive for contamination levels of above 2%, even though it is clearly known thatthe levels of contamination are much lower. This test would only further the cover-up, and allow extensive imports of GM rice at low-level contamination. The adoption of this test by the EU would therefore be unacceptable.

The effects of the incident were felt in California last week, when a new Bill, pushed by the GM industry, which attempted to forbid counties from declaring local bans on GM crops, was dropped by the Senate. The disastrous effects that GM contamination can have on farmers could clearly be seen, as well as the importance of taking strong measures to protect agriculture.

This case has highlighted the weakness in the US GM regulatory system. The fact that officials have no idea of the extent of the contamination or how it happened, shows that the entire regulatory structure is weak. It fails to even recognise the possibility of risk, let alone take steps to minimise it or protect the public in any way. It almost defies belief that the US still have the arrogance to force their capacity building Biosafety "expertise" on African countries when their own failures are so apparent.

The contamination could have further implications for Africa. Not only do countries such as Ghana import US rice, but Mali, Cameroon, Zambia, both Congos, Central African Republic and Liberia all receive rice as Food Aid as well. If the US GM rice is rejected by the main export markets, we might expect this surplus to be "dumped" by USAID as food aid for Africa, as has happened with their GM maize.

Best wishes,

Teresa

Subject: Stop SB 1056 - Protect Local Governments' Authority Over Seeds!

Dear xxxxxx,

Stop SB 1056 - Protect Local Governments' Authority Over Seeds!

Urgent action needed on the California seed pre-emption bill -
We know we asked you to contact your legislators before, but the
bill is still in play, and we need your help again!
http://ga3.org/ct/Ad2uiLK1dmm-/

Right now, the California Legislature is considering Senate Bill
1056, the bill that would pre-empt local government restrictions
over genetically engineered seeds and nursery stock. If this
bill passes into law, it will override future restrictions on
genetically engineered crops and seeds, as well as all other
regulations of seeds, at the local level.

According to a recent media report, the bill?s sponsor, Senator
Florez, is considering amending the bill to make it a two-year
moratorium on local seed regulations, likely to make the bill
easier to pass. Whether temporary or permanent, SB 1056 is an
anti-democratic end-run that addresses none of the legitimate
concerns that have been raised by citizens and local
governments. Until meaningful regulation is in place at the
state level that protects farmers, the environment and public
health from the risks of genetically engineered crops, we must
retain the right to make decisions at the local level.

We have very little time left to stop this bill, SB 1056 may be
heard by the Assembly any day now, and will then go to the
Senate. Contact your state legislators and Senate President pro
Tem Perata NOW and tell them to stop SB 1056!
TAKE ACTION NOW AT: http://ga3.org/ct/Ad2uiLK1dmm-/

This extended interview with Jeffrey M. Smith author of "Seeds of Deception". This book is probably the single most important book of our time and is absolutely critical reading for everyone. In it, he goes into the details of the process of how foods are genetically modified and exactly why it is extremely dangerous. Based on extensive interviews and research he shows how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has completely sold out to the biotech industry and has colluded at the highest levels with companies like Monsanto.

Monsanto is notorious as the company which made the Agent Orange pesticide agent which it initially claimed was safe but which inadvertently led to the toxic poisoning of thousands of vietnamese and american servicement. To this day there are hundreds of thousands of children born with severe deformities in Vietnam where hundreds of thousands of tons of Agent Orange were indiscrimately dumped all over.

If you are in the dark about genetic engineering I advice you to read this book and be cautious. If you use non-organic dairy products you are probably ingesting artificially high levels of hormones like Insulin Growth Factor (IGF) which is strongly suspected of contributing to breast and other cancers. This and other hormones are released in a cascade into the bloodstream of cows which are injected with the genetically-modified hormone rgBH. Immediately after cows are injected with this hormone the levels of other hormones in their blood like IGF skyrocket. Initially researches wanted a 5 day period after injection with rgBH during which milk would not be taken from cows, to allow the hormone levels to go back down to normal. But Monsanto easily pushed the FDA to not implement this safety period.

This is just one sick example of how the american public has been outright betrayed by the FDA. The book goes into how overwhelming concern by researchers at the FDA have been consistently marginalized or completely ignored by the highest level appointees at the FDA, many of whom have even worked for Monsanto and other biotech companies.
Given that there are no labeling laws, it is a disaster for people who don't want to put this monstrous stuff into their bodies. I studied recombinant DNA and know how monstrous GM food really is (the Biopiracy companies always tout their supposed successes and proclaim they are helping the world, but you should read about the grotesque failures in their experiments to get an idea of what they are working with).

I just made a post on Herbavores S.F. tribe, http://vegheads.tribe.net/thread/7ce5e760-a439-419e-9b1c-6eee1f25480f hoping to find others who want to disseminate information to the community about what is going on. In the meantime, does anyone know which restaurants, if any, guarantee that they are GM-free?

I went to Japantown and queried every last restaurant in the main mall and can report that none of them was able to guarantee that any of their stuff was GM-free. Most of them did not even comprehend the GM issue at all.

I'd love to get organized and set up some kind of organization which queries restaurants on their GM status. If they pass, perhaps they could display a little logo in their window.

I know we all have our favorite restaurants that are vegetarian, but what is often more important is knowing places that aren't vegetarian that do vegetarian food well. I guess I am mainly thinking of a bit more upscale, but not terrible pricey places (I'm thinking places along the lines of Luna Park).

I recently had dinner at the very hyped Range with some friends. None of them are vegetarian and could not stop raving about their meals, however there was only one vegetarian entree, which I find rather boring and bland. So, what are your favorites for vegetarian at a non-vegetarian restaurant? One of my votes would be Soluna.

I've been to their Civic Center location a few times. The food is still tasty and filling but I've noticed a steady decline in the atmosphere and the service. Mostly the service. But I won't stop going, because it holds a special place in my heart. I wonder what precipitated the move downtown. It happened while I was living outside of the City.

Do you have any suggestions where we can go? The place doesn't have to be vegetarian-only but have vegetarian options. She's looking for clean places and would prefer not returning to the Mission district but would be okay going there if need be. (I like Bugaloos but being in the Mission is not good for m'mom.) Any suggestions would be fabulous! Thanks so much for reading!

This is what I ordered, and after I left the restaurant I realized this place would be good for veggie folks too.

BRUSCHETTA CON POMODORO toasted bread, marinated tomatoes. Delicious tasting - garlic w/ diced tomatoes on a very soft but toasted bread.

PIZZETTA FUNGHI mozzarella, mushrooms, wild oregano, tomato sauce Very lovely pizza thin crust, and not too crunchy.

INSALATA MISTA butter lettuce, roma tomatoes

I liked their bread it was soft all around, and their olive oil is mixed in with rosemary.

Two weekends ago I was going to see this one-woman show, "I Look Like an Egg, but I Identify as a Cookie" at the Hotel Rex. She's a stand-up who bakes chocolate chip cookies for the audience while doing her thing...cute (but not vegan...they have eggs.)

Anyway, we didn't have much time to eat, and The Hotel has an attached little restaurant. Somehow I had been thinking it was a pannini-type place. BUt my surprise was that it was this awesome bistro with what they describe as "Franco-Latino" cuisine.

It's not a veggie restaurant, but there were numerous veggie choices in every section of the tapas style menu. And they were creative, richly flavored choices...anything but steamed vegetables or plain old pasta primavera.

The garlic-manchego french fries were so good we ordered a second batch, and the desserts were also way yummy.

Lastly service was great too, especially given that I was doing my usual "does that have chicken broth" routine.

So, if you're looking for a great evening, I would highly recommend the Cafe Andree and the comedy/baking show at the Hotel Rex. We're doing it again next weekend even!

It's @ 1972 Lombard (cross street is Webster) and a little pricey but not too bad -- They use 100% organic ingredients(reason why it's a little more $) and it's raw and vegan!! I had the fake salmon pette(sp?) and the lemon cheesecake!!
Speaking of weddings, we couldn’t resist sharing the top-notch contents of the 2005 wedding boxes. Generously provided by VeganEssentials.com, one of the most popular online veg superstores, each of our eight couples featured in the January/February wedding issue were sent a box. Inside were a BeansWax soy candle, chocolate truffles from Givere, and massage oil from Nature’s Acres. Couples also received a one-year subscription to VegNews along with our signature oversized tote bag. No wonder we had so many applicants! You may now kiss the bride.
* Nourishing Vegetarian Soups *

http://r.vresp.com/?VegNewsMagazine/1e775942cf/279757/8ef5c3ece6/beb6ace
The weather is cold, and that calls for warm, nourishing soup! While miso soup is the fastest to make, it doesn't have that wonderful aroma and cozy feeling of a hearty bowl of soup. Still, when time is tight, miso soup is as tasty and healthful as any soup there is. For two servings, in a small pot, boil two cups of water. When it's boiling, turn off the heat and add one to two tablespoons of miso paste, depending on how strong you want the flavor to be (miso is sold in the refrigerated section of natural food stores and most supermarkets.). Stir thoroughly to dissolve. Optional additions include chopped green onion (scallions) or sliced red or yellow onion, small cubes of fresh tofu, and any other vegetables you like. These additions should be added to the boiling water before the miso is added.

Recently, I discovered another fairly quick soup that's also delicious: Garbanzo Bean & Tomato Soup from Jennifer Raymond's The Peaceful Palate. Using canned organic tomatoes makes the preparation even faster. Two cups of chopped cabbage is less than one quarter of a large head, so any leftover chunks of cabbage from
another meal are perfect for this. Green cabbage makes a prettier soup, but red cabbage works just as well. You can even substitute dried parsley for the fresh. I hope you like it as much as I do!

Garbanzo Bean & Tomato Soup

2 teaspoons olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 cup chopped tomatoes, fresh or canned
2 cups cabbage, chopped
1 potato, diced (peel first if using a russet potato)
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
4 cups water or vegetable stock
One 15-ounce can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
1 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt

Heat the oil in a large pot and sauté the onion until soft, about 3-5 minutes. Add the garlic, tomatoes, cabbage, potato, parsley, water or stock, garbanzo beans, paprika, and black pepper. Simmer until the potato and cabbage are tender, about 15 minutes. Ladle approximately 3 cups of the soup into a blender. Starting on a low speed, blend until smooth, making sure to hold the lid on tightly. Return the blended soup to the pot and stir to mix, adding salt to taste.
* Hot New Item: Vegan Marshmallow Fluff *

http://r.vresp.com/?VegNewsMagazine/648db9b029/279757/8ef5c3ece6/beb6ace
In late 2004, the VegNews staff started to hear rumors of a vegan Marshmallow Cream coming to the market. Imagine our delight when discovering the sweet, fluffy Ricemellow Crème at a trade show, especially as it was oozing out of warm s’mores. We’ve since tried it in rice crispy treats, on hot chocolate and even in a Ricemellow and peanut butter sandwich. This will be your new favorite indulgence! The company also makes a delicious line of flavored Rice Syrups (the chocolate variety tastes wonderful with the Ricemellow Creme).
